[edit] GenBioOrg: Your Student Organization

What is GenBioOrg?
GenBioOrg is the registered student organization for the VA Tech graduate program in Genetics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology (GBCB). The purpose of this organization is to foster a sense of community among GBCB students, disseminate useful information about GBCB, VA Tech, and the New River Valley, integrate GBCB with other departments and programs on campus, and provide GBCB students with a voice on matters pertaining to the program.

Why should I participate?
The success of the GBCB program depends on the involvement of its student body. As a volunteer organization, GenBioOrg depends on your participation in order to accomplish its goals. The more students who actively take part in GenBioOrg, the louder the voice when it comes to important issues like curriculum development.

What can I do?

  • Add yourself to the Wiki! Take a few minutes to create an account and set up your User page. For example, post your C.V., your research goals, your contact information. The GenBioOrg Wiki is where the GBCB community begins.
  • Make suggestions for Web site features and content - stuff you would find useful. Even better, add it to the Wiki yourself.
  • Participate in as many GenBioOrg activities as possible (Easy Chair, programming help sessions, the picnic, game night, etc.).
  • Want to start an activity? Have a meeting? Something missing from GenBioOrg? Make a suggestion!
  • Spread the word about GBCB, at conferences, on trips, at your college homecoming.
If you want to participate, but don't know what to do, or if you have any suggestions or ideas, please Contact_us.

[edit] VaBIO at VA Tech

What is VaBIO?
VaBIO, the Virginia Biotechnology Association, is a non-profit association. The purpose of the Association is to promote the biotechnology industry in Virginia, expand the knowledge and expertise of Virginia’s businesses concerning biotechnology through seminars, educational publications and other means, to enhance public awareness of the biotechnology industry in Virginia and the scientific, economic and other benefits it provides, and to represent the interests of the biotechnology industry in Virginia before federal, state and local legislators and regulators.

Why should I participate?
A student organization could help students get the ear of state legislators, provide a forum for students to present, and meet with representatives from industry. It will also help students get acquainted with industry, and hopefully start to have internship opportunities and give corporate partners a chance to see students at work - which could lead to future jobs.

What can I do?
Currently, there is no VaBIO presence on VA Tech campus. We would like to change that. If you or any others you may know would be interested in participating, either as an organizer or a member, please Contact_us.
