[edit] Mission
GenBioOrg is the student organization for the graduate program in Genetic, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology (GBCB) at Virginia Tech. Our program has a small number of students scattered across many departments and flung to the four corners of campus (and off-campus as well). Our charter as GenBioOrg is to work to provide a sense of academic, educational, and social cohesiveness for our fellow students, as well as to promote our program and our field of study to the wider community. In support of this mission, we host this Wiki as a central location for news and events. We also hold a variety of social events, including the GBCB Welcome picnic, and play host to outside speakers to discuss broad themes in bioinformatics.
[edit] History
GenBioOrg was founded in 2006 by three GBCB students (Timothy Driscoll, Chris Lasher, and LaChelle Waller). In its first year, GenBioOrg hosted a welcome picnic for incoming students and established an informal discussion group (Easy Chair) covering wide ranging topics in GBCB. We also put forward several proposal for developing additional curriculum in GBCB, and named a representative to the GBCB Steering Committee. In 2007, we received funding to start the GenBioOrg Invited Speaker Series, and in November 2008 hosted the first such speaker, Deepak Singh of amazon.com.
